Lakland Basses: Skyline 55-02, 44-64 & Darryl Jones
Lakland built its name in Chicago the slow way: Dan Lakin started the company in 1994 making basses that took the classic American designs seriously — the right woods, the right hardware, necks that feel broken-in from day one — and the Skyline series is how most players get in. Skylines are built overseas to Lakland's specs and inspected and set up in Chicago before they ship, and they carry the same designs as the handmade USA line at a working player's price.
Our Lakland wall right now is all Skyline: 49 listings, with 28 in stock and ready to ship, from $1,299 to $2,227. Here's the family.
The 02 series: the flagship design
The 55-02 is the Skyline version of Lakland's flagship 55-94 — a Music Man-style humbucker at the bridge, a single-coil at the neck, and Lakland's LH3 preamp tying it together, so one bass covers P, J, and MM territory without breaking a sweat. The 4-string is the 44-02, same recipe. We stock Deluxe and Custom finishes, and right now there are even fretless 55-02s in the building — lined ebony boards, if you've been waiting for one.
44-64: the P-style, plus Geezer
The 44-64 is Lakland's Precision-style workhorse — the design that started life as the Bob Glaub signature. The Customs on our wall come with the 1.5-inch Jazz-taper neck option for players who want P thump without the P neck. And then there's the GZ: the Geezer Butler signature 44-64s, loaded with EMG Geezer Butler pickups, in gloss black and fretless versions.
The J-style corner: 55-60 and Darryl Jones
The 55-60 is the 5-string Jazz-style in the line, all vintage voice and snap. The Darryl Jones signature takes that idea and reshapes it — a downsized, contoured body that balances better on a strap, in 4 and 5-string. Jones 5s with black blocks, a natural ash 4, Lake Placid Blue — we've got a run of them in stock.
The 01 series: the way in
The 44-01 and 55-01 are the most affordable Skylines we carry — $1,299 gets you the 55-01 in Natural/Maple — and they don't feel like a compromise. Same Chicago setup, same design language, just a simpler electronics package.
